BERLIN (AFP) -- Military armored cars will definitely be stationed around the World Cup stadiums in four German cities, the government revealed on Wednesday in response to a question from left-wing lawmakers.

The "Fuchs" vehicles will operate near the stadiums in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hannover and Leipzig, according to a government press statement.

The police and civilian security controllers will decide where to station the vehicles in the other eight cities where matches will be played, the government said.

It has been decided that four of the vehicles will be used in Berlin, which will host six matches including the final on July 9, while just two will be stationed in other cities.

The vehicles will be fitted with equipment capable of detecting a nuclear, chemical or biological attack.

The German army will not be deployed for crowd control duties during the World Cup, because doing so would have necessitated a change to the German constitution which strictly sets out the duties of the police and the military.

However 2,000 troops, including soldiers trained in dealing with nuclear, chemical or biological attacks, will be stationed in the host cities.

A total of 250,000 police officers will be on duty for the month-long finals, the Interior Ministry says.
